Great work Vaughan! And fabulous photos. Out now from five day’s walk on the Old Ghost Road - highly recommended for biking or walking. Drove to Franz Josef today to meet up with Owen. Very nice to meet up with Sarah and Mike at a cafe in Greymouth. Passed many first wave TA riders between Greymouth and Franz and gave them a toot. Also saw many TA bikes leaned at every roadside cafe along the way 😄

Hi Vaughan, I have been following your exploits with great interest. There have been a few gaps in communication down here on the west coast. I have spoken to quite a few TA riders in cafes and pubs. They all seem to be first wave and are very happy to talk between mouthfuls. I hope the weather holds out for you down here, only 2 wet days for me. The only rule biking on the west coast is ride fast enough to keep ahead of the sandflies. Keep up the good work. Cheers, Owen

Good going Vaughan! If you should need accommodation between Fox and Haast this is the only accommodation we know of. Several little cabins and welcoming to cyclists. We stayed here overnight.

For those interested in the bike... It's a 29er hard tail Focus Raven. On the front is a roll bag with sleeping bag, food and rain gear. Tent strapped to the front of that. The frame bag holds power bank and cables, toilet bag, first aid kit and sunscreen. A dry bag is strapped to the rear rack containing clothes sleeping mat, jandals, offer jacket and a towel. Top tube bag has food, sunnies etc... And that's it!

The front is a bit different. Jones handlebars are very swept back and proved super comfortable. My Aero bars are lower than most and were a lifesaver with all the southerly winds we got. On the bars are the Spot tracker, phone holder and padded bottle holder which worked a treat... Kept my poweraid cool 😇. The Red thing is a Bluetooth speaker. That was my best bit of non essential kit... I had tunes for every moment... It totally made the trip for me.

Just have to add that bike was super reliable. Rear disc pads in Palmy and nothing else! Not even an adjustment required and still riding as sweet as a nut!

There were highlights every day and the best ones are still so numerous... Riding onto 90 mile beach, Timber trail, bridge to nowhere and the jet boat ride, Maruia valley, Maungatapu and Nelson trails, surviving big River, the wilderness trail, Wanaka lakes, the crown Range, the Earnslaw and Walter Peak/Mt Von... And reaching the end!
